Reference post: what does available inventory mean in your shop?
Stone Profit Systems lists inventory, holds, and multiple-location functions in its ERP offering. Those categories raise a basic question for any shop evaluating inventory software: which material should staff describe as available?

Define the terms together
In a proposed shop vocabulary, physically present, reserved, committed to production, and awaiting confirmation could describe different conditions. Agree on definitions that fit the business before adopting software labels. Do not assume these example terms correspond to a particular vendor's configuration.
Use a hypothetical slab requested by two salespeople. Ask which decision commits it, who can release that commitment, and what the second salesperson sees. Then add a transfer between locations and discuss who owns the record while the material moves.
Bring evidence to the discussion
When asking other shop owners about their approach, explain the decision that causes confusion and the departments involved. A specific exception is easier to discuss than a broad statement that inventory software is unreliable.
For a vendor demonstration, request that the agreed scenario be shown and record any configuration work required. This editorial reference does not claim that one workflow fits every business. It establishes a vocabulary for comparing processes and invites actual experience without manufacturing member replies, complaints, or endorsements.
Software options to evaluate
Use the same practice job and acceptance criteria for each proposed configuration. These brief descriptions reflect vendor documentation, not independent test results.

- Horus — slab tracking and layout tools.
- Moraware — quoting, scheduling and inventory products.
- SlabOS — a platform spanning drawing, quoting, inventory, nesting, scheduling and field work. Platform documentation.
